Sukhna Lake will die in 75 years from now: Experts
Hot weather leads to dip in water level of Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh
Around 55 lakh cubic feet of silt, that has been removed from Sukhna Lake,is lying by the lake itself. Shortage of construction material that has stalled several projects has also ensured that the silt is yet to be utilised. The silt can only be used by the government and semi-government organisations as its commercial use is not allowed.
An official said contractors, who undertake government and semi-government projects, can make use of the silt but with most projects stalled due to non-availability of construction material, the contractors have not been able to utilise the silt.
Sukhna Lake is at its driest state ever this season, with water levels having fallen drastically and dry patches surfacing in most parts of the lake. The Administration has begun desiltation in an attempt to increase the lakes surface area. Weeds are also being removed along with this.
Officials state that instead of having to purchase silt for various works, they now have it available with them. However,it is when tenders are received for projects that it can be put to use.
A variety of projects are on hold in the city due to the construction material like sand and gravel not being available following a ban on mining. This is affecting even the carpeting of roads for which this is the season. With monsoons expected next month, the work could get postponed to September.
Meanwhile, the Administration on Thursday began salvage operations to save fish that have been dying in large numbers. With a large number of dead fish being spotted in the lake over the past few days, authorities are now transferring the surviving ones to deeper waters.
